First of all, the thing is using a linear colour ramp. As a result, this adds little tone and just makes it look generically orange instead of being tinted with analogous colours, such as red or perhaps even cyan highlights to make it pop more. Secondly, the black internal outline for the eyes looks awful - this should be taken away as it looks way too stark compared to the light orange, perhaps it'd work if there was more contrast in the colouring. This bring me on to my next point, the artist has used three primary shades of orange for the hat, a light, medium, and dark - however, these don't contribute all that much to the shape of it due to them being so close in tint to each other. The next glaringly obvious issue is the perspective of the stalk. While most graphics in the game have a 3/4 topdown-centric perspective, the stalk has voided this rule, therefore making it look flat. Furthermore, there is no evidence of shading or texturing on it, the artist could have styled it in a plethora of different ways, such as making it curl - instead it has been done in a fairly bleak, generic way. Not to mention, the line art is jaggy on the stalk and looks like an afterthought that was just tacked on to make it look more like a pumpkin. There is also no hue shifting, simply tinting the lightest green colour yellow would greatly benefit the hat and certainly make it pop more. The lack of detail is also astonishing. Due to the issues I've mentioned earlier on, the non-contrasting colours of the hat make it look flat. There is no evidence of texturing apart from the creases, which again, look jagged due to the lack of anti-alias. This issue is also parallel with the way the artist has designed the eyes. There is no interior shadow to show the depth of the pumpkin, just a solid dark-orange colour. On top of the stalk, the eyes look as if they have been copied and pasted on too. The bottom of the pumpkin also looks jagged and there should not be a dark outline around the 'opening-hole' where the player's head would show. Furthermore, highlights could have greatly benefitted the hat and made it look somewhat three dimensional and defined the light-source greater. Perhaps tinted yellow highlights in decreasing circular formations for each crease would be a nice touch? The shading of the pumpkin also doesn't fit the shape of it - the colours should 'wrap around' more to show that it is spherical, not simply just be stacked. In conclusion, this hat fails to meet many pre-requeisties of pixel art and does not fit the style of Classic's graphics in any way, shape or form. I would highly recommend the artist in question to learn about colours and highlighting in this tutorial linked below. http://pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11299 and that's just the front view. |
