I - GraalOnline Classic's Bug Concept
Since July 2012, GraalOnline Classic has made a feature available to all players in the game: bug catching. The general idea is to use a net in order to capture different bug species with a net – either to sell them for some gralats or collect them and set them free inside your house. The only item required to start is the net. Before explaining that, I would first like to address some points:
-When a bug is caught, it is put into a jar and stored inside your items in a separate folder called ‘bugs’;
-Jars need not be bought and are infinite in number;
-To release a bug in your house, go to the ‘bug’ folder, select your bug and use it as if it were some sort of item;
-Bugs cannot be released into the wild or in other players’ houses. Tapping a caught bug will simply make you show the bug, while it is inside of the jar;
-A house room can hold a maximum of 21 bugs;
-Indoor butterflies have been known to randomly disappear. I do not know whether this problem has been solved yet, so release them inside at your own risk;
-Looking for bugs should be done zoomed-out. This makes finding one easier;
-Catching bugs is less difficult zoomed-in. It allows you to time your swings better.
II - The Net
A crucial accessory required to commence bug catching, is the net. This net is completely free and can be acquired in a small house in MoD town: Adam’s Treehouse. You will only need to speak to the NPC inside. To equip the net, you should tap/click your character, then one of your items (standard bombs and arrows) and select the folder ‘tools’. The net can be found in there.
Basically, utilisation of the net is quite simple. It can be swung into four different directions: left, right, up and down, corresponding to the way the player is facing. A bug can only be caught when the net is swung spot on; this may require some practice to fully master. Generally, swinging upwards is considered to be the most successful position: when a bug touches the upper side of your head, in the middle, a catch is almost always guaranteed. However, there are some exceptions to this trick.
Like this.
III - Selling Bugs
Bugs can be sold for a small price at a small house in Swamptown: Beryl’s Treehouse. She buys all your bugs for a set price; these are listed later on. Every day, this witch has a bug she desperately needs, therefore multiplying the amount of gralats received per bug by 1.5. This is a good opportunity to earn some cash! To find out which bug she needs, bump into her. In order to sell a bug, equip the bug to one of your item slots and use it. A small conversation with Beryl will then pop up, asking you whether you are sure and you will also see how much you will earn in total. If you refuse to give all of a certain bug, you can also sell off a single one.

V – Map of Important Locations
In the next part of this guide, I will be referring to certain places you might not be familiar with. To avoid confusion, I will list the most important locations (not towns). The two treehouses are also indicated.
A = Onnet Forest
B = Master Li’s Forest
C = Adam’s Treehouse
D = Beryl’s Treehouse
E = Swamptown Library
F = Secret Butterfly Shop
VI - Bug Information
Important Notice: I have been catching bugs since the arrival of the bug catching system. The pictures in this guide may be from a while back and the bugs may not be available at this moment. Additionally, I might be unable to provide full information on all species, simply because I have not had the experience with them. Any corrections or additions will be highly appreciated.
The following information is derived from my experiences and the library in Swamptown.
Also, even though bugs may have the same rarity (for example, ‘Rare’), some are rarer than others. E.g. the Tiger Butterfly has always been more common than the Agrias Butterfly. The details about size are not proportional to the size of the bug in Graal.
Butterflies – 12
Butterflies are constantly moving. They change their flying direction every few seconds and can be quite annoying to lure from water/cliffs to land. The rumour that they are attracted by lantern lights is not true. When spotting one, you can use the following procedure to catch it:
Step 1: Check its location. If you can catch it already, head towards it or towards the direction it is flying/escaping to (skip steps 2 and 3).
Step 2: Since the butterfly is either in an unreachable area or above water, look for where it is going to go. You cannot predict this completely, as the flying directions change constantly and are completely random.
Step 3: Pick a spot to wait for the butterfly. This can be anywhere within your predicted range in which the butterfly might fly. If you definitely want it yourself, try to not let others know you have spotted a certain butterfly by looking in the opposite direction or hiding under a bush.
Step 4: When it is within range, look around you. Are there any players nearby that might steal it? If so, try to catch it while staying in the position you were in and not walk around the butterfly to catch it while facing upwards. Someone might scare it away if you take too long.
Step 5: If no one seems interested, take your time to walk around the butterfly and catch it while facing upwards. As I have explained, you will have a guaranteed catch if you swing your net when a butterfly touches the top of your head, right in the middle (unless you experience a lag spike).
Step 6: Missed? Too bad. The butterfly will rapidly fly away from you. You can now do two things if you still want to catch it: if you are in a smaller room (Onnet Forest, Secret Butterfly Shop), wait for it to calm down again. This happens after approximately 15 seconds. If you are outside in the overworld, chase after it, for someone else will certainly take it if you let it go.
Step 7: In case it ends up above water or on a cliff, go back to step 2.
1. Agrias Butterfly
Habitat: Tropical/Woodlands
Size: 42mm
Rarity: Rare
Selling Price: 71 Gralats
Availability: Available
Perhaps the most wanted and mysterious butterfly, is the Agrias Butterfly. There is just a small group of players who have caught one due to the fact that this bug has only been around approximately between the months of August 2012 and February 2013, but now, it is back! It spawns inside of Onnet Forest and the Secret Butterfly Shop just west of Graal City. Some have been spotted at Oasis Island too!
2. Morpho Butterfly
Habitat: Tropical/Woodlands
Size: 120mm
Rarity: Uncommon
Selling Price: 51 Gralats
Availability: Available
The Morpho Butterfly, previously known as the Karner Butterfly, now called Blue Morpho Butterfly or simply Morpho Butterfly, has been around since the beginning of Graal’s bug catching. It can be found in all sorts of places; at this moment, Oasis, Onnet Forest and the Secret Butterfly Shop are the best locations to look for it.
3. Clouded Yellow Butterfly
Habitat: Coastal/Grassy
Size: 62mm
Rarity: Uncommon
Selling Price: 53 Gralats
Availability: Available
Clouded Yellow Butterflies are amongst the most common butterflies around. They are occasionally found in Graal City, MoD, York Town and Belle Island, especially near bodies of water.
4. Emperor Butterfly
Habitat: Woodlands
Size: 115mm
Rarity: Common
Selling Price: 20 Gralats
Availability: Available
Despite the impressive name, Emperor Butterflies are quite common nowadays. It used to be different: when bugs were first released, this butterfly used to be “as rare as a Charizard Card!”, as was announced last Summer. Even their animation used to be different: a purple version of the Blue Morpho (“Karner”) Butterfly. They tend to spawn near trees: Onnet Forest and Master Li’s Forest are excellent catching locations.
5. Green Hairstreak Butterfly
Habitat: Hillsides/Rail Tracks
Size: 34mm
Rarity: Rare
Selling Price: 84 Gralats
Availability: Available
With the removal if the railroad tracks, this butterfly had also disappeared. However, it has recently been sighted again at the cliffs in the south of Swamptown/Deadwood and the cliffs in the north of MoD.
6. Large White Butterfly
Habitat: Anywhere
Size: 63mm
Rarity: Common
Selling Price: 20 Gralats
Availability: Available
The Large White Butterfly is probably the most common butterfly around. It can be found in Oasis, Graal City, MoD, Onnet Town… arguably anywhere indeed.
7. Monarch Butterfly
Habitat: Anywhere
Size: 70mm
Rarity: Common
Selling Price: 34 Gralats
Availability: Available
This butterfly is comparable to the Large White Butterfly. It can appear all over the map, although it is more often seen east of Graal City than west of Graal City. Make sure to check Master Li’s Forest!
8. Peacock Butterfly
Habitat: Anywhere
Size: 100mm
Rarity: Rare
Selling Price: 70 Gralats
Availability: Available
Although it is said they can be found anywhere, there are only a few spawning locations for this butterfly: North Graal City, the cliffs below Snowtown, Master Li’s Forest, Balamb Island and Belle Island and Oasis. You might also encounter them in the Graal City center and MoD, since they often fly to these places from their spawning points.
9. Ringlet Butterfly
Habitat: Woodlands/Riverbanks
Size: 110mm
Rarity: Common
Selling Price: 34 Gralats
Availability: Available
Ringlet Butterflies used to be incredibly common, but they are not often seen these days. If you are looking for one, the cliffs west of MoD and Onnet Forest might help you out.
10. Small Blue Butterfly
Habitat: Grassy/Rail Tracks
Size: 27mm
Rarity: Uncommon
Selling Price: 52 Gralats
Availability: Available
The Small Blue Butterfly is back after some time of absence. Especially the south of Swamptown, MoD and Master Li’s Forest are great catching locations for this bug.
11. Swallowtail Butterfly
Habitat: Wetlands
Size: 86mm
Rarity: Uncommon
Selling Price: 40 Gralats
Availability: Available
As the Swamptown library indicates, Swallowtail Butterflies spawn above water. Especially the ocean east of Deadwood and the river east and south of Belle Island occasionally contain one.
12. Tiger Butterfly
Habitat: Woodlands
Size: 90mm
Rarity: Rare
Selling Price: 69 Gralats
Availability: Available
Another beautiful butterfly is the Tiger Butterfly. They are quite rare, but not as rare as a Peacock Butterfly. They usually spawn in Onnet Forest, Master Li’s Forest, the Secret Butterfly Shop and MoD.
Other bugs - 10
1. Bumblebee
Habitat: Grasslands
Size: 4mm
Rarity: Uncommon
Selling Price: 87 Gralats
Availability: Available
The newest member of the bug club – the Bumblebee – is also the hardest to catch so far. Unlike normal bugs, this once is so grumpy that it follows you around until it stings you and it dies! In order to find it, you should destroy grass (lower spawn rate) or bushes (higher spawn rate). If one happens to spawn, a Bumblebee will stay still for approximately 2 seconds while flashing red. It then charges right at the player that made it spawn. If it gets to you before you catch it, you lose 0.5 health and the bee is gone. In order to catch one, the following procedure should be taken into account:
Step 1: The Bumblebee has spawned. Try to run around it to gain some extra distance.
Step 2: Stand above the bee, facing downwards. When it is in range of your net, swing it. This succeeds 70% of the time, since timing is very important here.
Trying to catch one while facing upwards, is impossible. It can be done sideways though, but it is extremely hard.
2. Dragonfly
Habitat: Swampy Areas
Size: 76mm
Rarity: Very Common
Selling Price: 8 Gralats
Availability: Available
The most common bug around, is the Dragonfly. They are omnipresent in Swamptown, but you sometimes see them at Balamb Island too. Of all bugs, they are the easiest to catch. Dragonflies move for half a second, then stay still for about 5 seconds. Missing one will simply cause it to move a small distance, but it will not fly away like butterflies. They are excellent practice for beginners to get to know the length and width of your net, allowing them to catch other bugs easier. Catching procedure:
Step 1: After having located a Dragonfly, move towards it. If it is out of reach, go find another or wait for a few seconds.
Step 2: Swing your net. Did you miss? Try again.
3. Firefly
Habitat: Dark Areas/Woodlands
Size: 16mm
Rarity: Fairly Common
Selling Price: 34 Gralats
Availability: Available
Serving as excellent decorative lights inside of houses, Fireflies are fortunately available again! When Deadwood was cut in half and the railroads disappeared, they left as well, but they are back! When catchable, Onnet Forest and Deadwood are the only locations they spawn at. The catching procedure is similar to the one involving butterflies, as Fireflies follow the same movement pattern as butterflies (although they are a little smaller and might be harder to hit):
Step 1: Check its location. If you can catch it already, head towards it or towards the direction it is flying/escaping to (skip steps 2 and 3).
Step 2: Since the Firefly is in an unreachable area, look for where it is going to go. You cannot predict this completely, as the flying directions change constantly and are completely random.
Step 3: Pick a spot to wait for the Firefly. This can be anywhere within your predicted range in which the Firefly might fly. If you definitely want it yourself, try to not let others know you have spotted a certain Firefly by looking in the opposite direction or hiding under a bush.
Step 4: When it is within range, look around you. Are there any players nearby that might steal it? If so, try to catch it while staying in the position you were in and not walk around the butterfly to catch it while facing upwards. Someone might scare it away if you take too long.
Step 5: If no one seems interested, take your time to walk around the Firefly and catch it while facing upwards. As I have explained, you will have a guaranteed catch if you swing your net when a Firefly touches the top of your head, right in the middle (unless you experience a lag spike).
Step 6: Missed? Too bad. The Firefly will rapidly fly away from you. You can now do two things if you still want to catch it: if you are in a smaller room (Onnet Forest), wait for it to calm down again. This happens after approximately 15 seconds. If you are outside in the overworld, chase after it, for Fireflies disappear if they fly out of a dark area like Deadwood.
Step 7: In case it ends up being unreachable again, go back to step 2.
4. Grasshopper
Habitat: Grassy Areas
Size: 40mm
Rarity: Fairly Common
Selling Price: 20 Gralats
Availability: Available
Grasshoppers literally spawn anywhere where grass is present, except for Air Asia. No exceptions. Sometimes even indoors! Despite their wide availability, it can be quite tough to catch one if you do not know how. Their movement consists of two phases: a jumping phase and a resting phase. You can only catch one while the latter phase appears. Since a Grasshopper only stays still for a brief moment, you should try to walk to it in the jumping phase and swing your net just after it has landed. If you practice enough, it will be rather easy.
Step 1: Locate the Grasshopper. If others are also going after it, randomly start mashing your net at the hopper, otherwise you will certainly lose it.
Step 2: If no one is around, you can catch it efficiently by walking to it while it is jumping, then swinging your net just after it has landed, since you can predict the ending position of the jump.
5. Ladybug / Black Ladybug
/
Habitat: Around Flowers
Size: 6mm
Rarity: Fairly Common/Rare
Selling Price: 37 Gralats / 73 Gralats
Availability: Available
Ladybugs are regularly found in grassy fields alongside Grasshoppers. This includes Belle Island, the ‘unstuck me’ location, Graal City, MoD… and many more locations. They stay still on the ground for a while, then fly a moderate distance towards another piece of land. They cannot be caught in mid-air. Black Ladybugs are identical to Ladybugs, except for their name, colour and selling price. Therefore, they have the same spawning locations.
Step 1: Having located the Ladybug, go towards it. It almost never goes off-map.
Step 2: If it is flying, wait for it to land. Then swing the net.
Step 3: Missing it will make the bug fly away, but not very far.
6. Mantis
Habitat: Around Bushes
Size: 70mm
Rarity: Uncommon
Selling Price: 52 Gralats
Availability: Available
The Mantis, also known as Praying Mantis, resides on bushes and nowhere else. Belle Island, west of Master Li’s Forest, North Graal City and south of Graal City are arguably the best spots to catch them. They stay rather long on every bush they land on, but fly to another bush when you miss them. If you remove all the bushes around the Mantis, it will die. Then again, you can catch one in mid-air if you have the skills!
Step 1: After you have spotted a Mantis, go to it. If it is flying towards a bush, wait for it to land before swinging as this has a higher success rate.
Step 2: If you are battling over a Mantis, try to predict the bush it will move to. You can swing your net at that bush right before the Mantis lands and still catch it.
7. Pillbug
No info on Pillbugs can be found in the Swamptown Library. Only the NPC Albert tells us: “Reading the book on the Pillbugs. I didn’t know they were so rare to find! According to this, they can be found almost anywhere but are a hard find!”
Selling Price: 86 Gralats
Availability: Not Available (Unconfirmed)
Pillbugs are the rarest bugs in Graal. You could look for them for days and not seeing a single one. They spawned near railroad tracks and randomly across the map. They can enter and exit buildings (not your house), making them even more unpredictable. Pillbugs move like Grasshoppers, but they do not jump. This makes them a little easier to catch. If you miss a Pillbug, it will start moving around faster. Please note that I have not seen Pillbugs since the disappearance of the Agrias Butterfly in February this year and I presume they have left, but this is not confirmed.
Step 1: You will most likely not see a Pillbug in crowded places, since it will be caught almost right away. If you do see one, swing your net just after it stops moving.
Step 2: If you missed, repeat step 1.
8. Spider
Habitat: Dark Areas/Woodlands
Size: 7mm
Rarity: Uncommon
Selling Price: 70 Gralats
Availability: Not Available
Spiders were introduced in the Graaloween season in 2012, but have disappeared with the Agrias Butterflies. They could be found hanging from tree branches – first all over the map, later only in Onnet Forest. In order to catch one, you will need to cut it down. After that is done, it will move occasionally over very small distances:
Step 1: Cut down the Spider. This can be done either by sword or by throwing an object. Bombs and arrow do not work.
Step 2: When the spider hits the ground, you will have to aim very very carefully. Spiders only get caught if they are exactly in the middle of the net. A tiny bit left and you will not catch it.
Step 3: If a group of people starts to form around the Spider, all trying to catch it, the only option is to randomly smash the net on the ground and hope the Spider was beneath it.
Step 4: If it takes too long, the Spider will simply climb up the tree again. In that case, go back to step 1.
9. Worm
Habitat: Underground
Size: 170mm
Rarity: Very Common
Selling Price: 1 Gralat
Availability: Available
The Worm is the only bug that needs another item to catch aside from the net: the shovel. This item can be found under a waterfall in MoD, but I will not cover the entire quest. Rumour has it that Worms will be used for something else in the future due to their extremely low selling price. Sadly, this has never been confirmed. Worms are the only bugs that cannot be released in your house. In order to make Worms appear, you will have to dig in the ground. Occasionally, a Worm will pop out of the whole you just created. You can then swing your net at it. Worms do not move and go back underground 5 seconds after spawning.
Step 1: Dig a hole. Digging upwards might cause you to miss the Worm if it spawns, since your head will block the view on the hole.
Step 2: When you find a Worm, try swinging at it while facing downwards. This is considered to be the most effective strategy regarding Worms.
Step 3: Do not take too long, or else you will have to find another Worm. Fortunately, Worms are rarely stolen by other players since they have absolutely no value right now and they disappear very quickly.
I hope this finally answers all questions a bug catcher may have. Cheers!
