Was it an entertaining movie? yes
Was it a good movie? no

If you don't watch or care at all about starwars, and you don't think about the film, you will enjoy it. If you have been watching starwars previously, you will have most likely already watched the entire plot of the film in a 30 minute clone wars television episode.

There are so many inconsistencies, so much disregard for things set up in the film prior, it's hard to even believe that the director even watched the previous film, let alone a starwars movie at all.

The beginning lone pilot taking on an entire ship. Looked cool, but suspended way beyond disbelief even for starwars.

The ending of force awakens which was seen as a powerful moment and speculated on for 2 years was turned into a literal throw away joke for a quick laugh.

The entire sub-plot of the casino planet did not even look or feel like a starwars film. The plot itself was unnecessary and meaningless.

The Rose character was uninteresting, ironically there is probably more character development from her than almost all the other main characters.

The memed admiral akbar who they could have used for the spaceship collision scene which would have been an awesome tribute to him is instead killed off screen and mentioned in 1 line, when the purple haired girl could have taken that place and it probably would have added to the story.

Luke is a *****

Leia is superwomen
(should have let her die in that scene, would have made the film better and actually been an impacting death considering her circumstances, yet now she will just likely be killed off screen for the next film)

Rey becomes a ninja warrior despite never being trained on doing any combat

Snoke gets bamboozled and is killed despite never being told anything about him and despite being the most powerful person in the entire starwars universe. (hope to god that he's not actually dead and just a reflection or whatever that luke did).

Kylo is a **** villain, they should have ran with what they started. (if snoke didn't actually die then they might).

90% of the deaths in the entire film would have been avoidable if that stupid purple haired leia wannabe just told them what her plan was. Lukes death is literally her fault.

Why was the film a 1 and a half hour slow space chase? The first order has supposedly almost gained control over the entire galaxy, and yet they never thought to call on another ship to space jump infront of them. Or just use their own fighters that they used to temporarily kill Leia, to keep doing what they did.

What was the point of Luke making a clone of himself across the entire galaxy just to dodge to 2 hits. Surely he could have gone there in person, and that would have actually meant more. Thought he was going to appear in his X-wing that they showed a shot of at the bottom of the ocean.

I don't really care as much about Luke as most starwars fans do but christ that was the worst possible pay off to his last film. I was expecting to see him do some crazy stuff like take down all the walkers using his powers I keep hearing the people who read the expanded universe stuff talk about- which would have also thrown back to his line earlier in the film where he joked about Rey thinking he would take on the first order by himself. Then when that didn't happen I was expecting them to do the Obi-Wan kenobi death, which they basically did, but instead of him dying there, he dies of heatstroke not even on that planet. Why isn't he even using his green lightsaber either.

Way more stuff but i'm done ranting now. RIP starwars, this replaceable **** just made to make a never ending series is all we're going to get considering this directors already been signed on for the next trilogy. I mean take out the lightsabers and storm troopers and it's just a generic disney scifi film. All the starwars essence is gone.


There were some cool scenes like the beginning space battle, the kylo/rey/ red guard fight scene, The shot of the spaceship getting ripped in half, yea that's it. Rogue One was way better, would have preferred the director from that took over.

it would have been cooler if fynn actually destroyed the siege thingy and became a hero and sorts, the illusion of luke was lame too

maybe if ben and rey had have sex, that would spice things up

at the very end i was like "o, a new anakin skywalker?"

Maybe the kid at the end of the movie before the credits was Rey and Ben's son. They had sex using the force.

Not happy at all about the way Luke was in this film. Ending was especially stupid. And the way Snoke was treated in the movie was also stupid.

Cgi was good, movie was okay. I'm not a huge star wars fan, but as a star wars film, it was bad. Luke did basically nothing, but make Kilo Ren angry, and help other escape, then guess what, dies. Characters were meh, being untrained in combat and everything else Rey can do literally everything. Finn is a *****. Everyone is dead, leia dies, then she un dies.

Movie just felt long, and boring, there were points where I didn't even feel like watching the movie. It just had no good plot and kept jumping from character to character. To me, it felt like a filler, with no real contribution to the whole franchise, more of a, hey this is what happens before the big plot. Not much to say, but it wasn't that great. Force Awakens was better. Originals were better

It sucks because there were plenty of opportunities to turn this into a great Star Wars movie but the director chose to pass on each. Luke going full out against the First Order on Crait would have been worth the price of admission.

 

I've been a starwas fan since I saw TPM in theater, and I loved TLJ. I think a lot of the **** starwars fans complain about today is ridiculous and that if the OT was held to the same standard people hold the new films to it would've gotten torn apart.

I do not understand why people have such issues with Luke in this film, his motives for what he does are pretty darn clear. Even if what he does is not technically right, its not like the Skywalker lineage has ever been represented as good decision makers. Plus it makes literally no sense as to why anyone would think that Luke would tear apart the First Order. His whole goal during the time between RoTJ and TFA was to rebuild the Jedi Order the way they should have existed, as true peacekeepers and disciples of the path of light. So why on earth would he in this movie go rampage mode on the First Order, ffs he wouldn't even strike Palpatine down in the OT. Plus he wouldn't have been able to force ghost himself if he did that.


Honestly my only problem with the movie was Rose. She was a terrible Disney caricature and that horrible "why fight what you hate when you can save what you love" line actually hurt to watch. Especially when what she just did should have put an end to herself, Finn, and the Rebel alliance because now, not only is the cannon fine; but when she intercepted Finn even if the crash didn't kill them both they are now weaponless like 20 ft from the First Order's entire army.

Fans of the original Star Wars trilogy have spent 34 years dreaming and wondering about what happened to their childhood idol after the events of Return of the Jedi. They read comics, stories etc throughout that time to give them their own interpretation of what happened. In these stories, Luke was very powerful and rightfully so. Now, even though those old stories are no longer canon, lots of people still believed and hoped that Luke would be a strong figure whom would show off the jedi abilities that he had learnt in all that time.

When Luke became a hologram the nostalgoa was unbelievable, a lot of people really thought he was going to take them on, even though Disney had made him a hermit figure (which a lot of people were dreading). Then when he disappeared at the end into a force ghost this was the last straw for many fans. It means that they would never get to see what they have wanted to see for decades. How strong Luke had fully become.

In the entire film there was no Lightsaber to Lightsaber combat at all. Which is extremely disappointing for fans of the franchise who enjoy watching lightsaber combat which has been in every star wars film, except this.

Many are saying it's a great Movie, I agree. A great Star Wars film? No. The characters could have been handled better, especially Luke who Ryan Johnson decided to pop-off because he believed he was interfeiring with the new main characters.

The movie sucked just like the last one. Almost as bad as Episode 2. What we were left to speculate after episode 7 were just blown to ashes. We learn that Rey is indeed Mary Sue who has parents that are nobody. Luke becomes some hermit drinking out of cow ****, and has apparently succumbed to fear. Luke attacking Kylo Ren wasn't the Luke we all know. Snoke is a nobody. The dude couldn't sense Kylo's lightsaber pointing directly towards his abdomen while lecturing about how he can see, and sense everything. He didn't see that one coming. The Asian girl was this trilogy's Jar Jar Binks that served no purpose at all.

 

It's just annoying because the narrative throughout the film was so ****, and just didn't feel like starwars, but because it's a movie it's now canon, and what everything that comes after will have to relate back to.

The prequel trilogy starwars movies had bad dialogue yes, but the story itself that the film was trying to convey was actually good. The look of the film, atmosphere and action were starwars. This film, just doesn't seem like it at all. Replace the lightsabers with normal swords and it could pass as a disney influenced star-trek EPISODE, not even a film.

As many people have said, the story of TLJ is as if the director looked at all the fan theories of what they thought was set up in TFA, and decided to completely go against it just to suprise fans. I'm happy the direction the film went was original, and not just a rehash as TFA was, but it's ultimately such a missed opportunity because of the way they went about it, despite having potential in some aspects it began to explore.

It's like they wanted to take risks, but at the same time they wanted to play it safe. So they would do something unexpected, that you're exited for, but then completely wrap it up and definitively end that narrative.

RIP, not exactly exited for the next one with the set up. Feel bad for JJ directing it, because all the set up he did in the first film was completely disregarded so now he'll have to pick up the limited pieces left by Ryan Johnson.

If this film wasn't a STARWAR's film, I wouldn't have minded. It wasn't a good film but it was enjoyable to watch. The Starwars attachment to the film is what's causing the issues as this is what will be looked back on, and have to be carried forward unless JJ pulls a Ryan Johnson and disregards his script like Ryan did to his film.

because it just makes no ****ing sense what so ever. In all the previous 7 starwars films, all the canon tv episodes, everything, what Luke did has never been done before, or even thought to be possible. Why would they introduce that in this film, just for the spectacle of him to have the illusion of being there for 5 minutes, to then just die.
If he was ready to die, why didn't he just go there in person, actually fight and then die. Let him go off in glory by taking down the whole army, fighting Kylo, then letting him kill him just so that he becomes a martyr for the rest of the 'resistance' who didn't even bother coming. Instead, nobody even knows he's actually dead in the film besides Leia/ Rey. If you're going to kill him, then kill him. Don't go "oh he's dead, wait nevermind he's not dead he tricked everyone, wait no he's actually dead." so stupid. Did the same **** with Leia but it would have made sense for that to be her death.
Look i'll give one example that would of improved the film. They wanted to show Leia has force powers, so when the missiles get shot at the bridge, Leia senses the missiles, uses her force powers to push everyone out of the bridge and close the door, dies a hero and shows the audience she had the force. Would have even meant Admiral Akbar would have survived, who could have then became the 2nd in command and been the one to crash the ship which would have been a good ending for his character. As opposed to become ****ing super man, die and comeback to life, fly back to the ship and be rescued and have NOBODY WHO SAW IT even question how TF she just did that, and act as if she uses the force all the time around them. Just another example of good setup, **** choice of execution and following through.

The only explanation that makes even remote sense for why they decided to do that whole illusion bull**** was because they want to show it's something that's possible in the starwars universe, so in the next film when someone like Snoke is still alive as his death was just an illusion like Lukes was, then there's an explanation for it as it had happened in TLJ.

I mean think of how stupid Lukes illusion death was. Before he dies, he gives Leia Han Solo's dice as a momento. But it's actually a hologram so as soon as he died it just dissapears because it wasn't even real. "Here Leia, keep this to remember Han, oh wait nevermind i'm dead now, you just got bamboozled"
