Why do you post it in the iEra section than rather than >here<?

Just do it the way you did it with your .gif avatar. Make sure you save it as a default format like .png, .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, ... and not in a special format like gimp, PS, ... got.  

upload to photobucket or something then get the direct link, then click the insert image button and paste the link  

Imgur is faster and simpler. Go to http://www.imgur.com, and drag your desired file to the website homepage and you're good to go. Make sure you export it was a .gif or .png before uploading, exporting it as an .xcf won't work.
