So, for the first time in 17 years periodically, these special pests will be making a return for a whole 2 weeks or so until they die off and their offspring remain untouched for another 17 years. If there's anyone else that lives in Ohio or any other area these insects lay their eggs, keep an eye out. You may just run into a swarm when you least expect it.

Hey I live in Ohio! Yeah, these things leave their shells all over the place. It's rare when I actually see one up close. My cat caught one once and it was cool to see him so close up.  

I loved finding their shells on trees as a kid.  

I swear these things are hangin around every year.

i remember these guys. they make for great white noise.  

we don't get that type where i'm from. i had no idea locusts and cicadas were the same thing.

during summer i used to run around looking for them in the back yard by following the chirps and catching them. they'd buzz around in your hands and usually stay there for a while unless you scared them away. they really liked hebes for whatever reason too.

i remember finding one that had somehow been chopped in half once. it was still moving around and everything.
