Nintendo 2DS
No this is not a joke... http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/08/...-announces-2ds ![]() It can play DS and 3DS games and has the same features as the 3DS but without the 3D capability. It'll cost $129.99 Nintendo is saying this DS is meant for 5 and 6 year olds. Nintendo is going down the pipes. The Wii U is a flop and the general public doesn't even know it exists. Now they release this mongoloid of a handheld device. |

Also this really doesn't say anything about the status of Nintendo. They have always released various iterations of their handhelds. Does no one remember this? http://img.engadget.com/common/images/8302965874342631.JPG?0.2350195647622022 (Unsupported image host) Wii U is crap though. I haven't had even the slightest inclination to get one, but we'll have to see what they eventually do with their first-party games. The only reason people buy Nintendo consoles are because of the exclusives, and them going so long without some big titles was a huge mistake. |

I honestly don't see why people are getting so upset over this. The official Youtube video has almost twice as many downvotes as upvotes, and everyone seems upset. It's not like they're ditching the 3ds for it, they run the exact same games. It's merely a different model. They've done stuff like the DS excel which is good for those who need a bigger screen or whatnot, and other things like the DS Lite and such. The original selling point of the 3ds was the "no glasses 3d". It was certainly a really cool concept, but it drove up the price of the device drastically as it required specific hardware to contain that functionality. I thought it was really cool at first, but eventually I started playing with it off because it gets old after a while, and it just gives me a headache(oh, and positioning it and my head perfectly for optimal visual quality wasn't fun either). Many others I know feel the same way, making the 3d pretty much something we paid for that we don't want. I'm not saying 3d was a bad idea(Nintendo is always the ones that innovate most in the gaming hardware industry). I'm just saying that the decision to include it drove up the price(for a major perk over other competitors), and that the decision to release this allows for a much cheaper option for those who just want to be able to play the games on it. The 2ds is basically another model of the 3ds for those who don't want 3d(or by Nintendo's description, also for young children who could get eye damage). It's also cheaper and more affordable, so if you don't care for the 3d much you can still get the device and play all the games you like with full functionality. If it wasn't for the god awful physical design(no folding, wtf), I would have probably bought one to play with my brother since it is much more affordable than the 3ds. But they decided to make it a solid shape that makes storage a pain, I can't fit it in my pocket like I could with any handheld. I really feel like that's what's holding them back, I imagine the no fold design was to make the device safer in some way or at least more optimized for young children(small breakable parts on hinges being choking hazards or something). I think they failed to consider their entire audience. Yes, Nintendo primarily markets their games and systems for children, but there is more benefits to the 2ds than being safer. Many people who don't care for the 3d could have purchased it as a more affordable option. I feel like their marketing and commerical for it wasn't very good. "Play all your favorite games in 2d" seems like a negative and almost misleading feature. I honestly went and checked the date to see if I was viewing an april 1st joke video or something, that's how silly it was. My brother even said "I'm checking if this is real" when he went to watch the official video. They pretty much advertised it as a better system when really it's just a new, cheaper design without 3d capabilities. On a side note, I'm a bit worried about how the new pokemon games will look on the 2ds. Based on the design of the environments and the overall way the camera seems to work in those games as seen in the videos released, I'm a bit concerned. They look almost as if they're extremely optimized to handle the 3d feature and bring it out to the best of it's ability. I know some games on the 3ds bring out the 3d more than others, but looking at x and y it seems with the whole depth design of the camera that it will be very strong on it. I think it may look out of place on the 2ds if they don't optimize the camera specifically for it, I know the game certainly looked odd watching it on my monitor without 3d. |

I would have bought a device like this if the design wasn't awful. I've been wanting a 3DS for a few games but dont wanna spend 200 just to play them. Its cheap and can play ds and 3ds games. And doesnt include the 3D gimmick that I would never use but still have to pay for with a 3DS. Yet it looks like a fisher price toy. I'll just keep waiting for a 3DS lite or maybe they'll pump out a few redesigns for this 2DS. |

It's marketed towards the younger kids who can't exactly have a 3DS due to potential eye damage. It looks great for kids and I will most likely get my younger brother one so he can stop asking me for my 3DS. He plays on the iPad half of his life already, so he is most likely already used to this format, and as Dusty said, it removes the hinge problems that I used to have when I was younger. Also, there is a reason they are targeting kids right now, pokemon. |

And pay extra money for a feature they won't use? It's quite obvious this is being marketed towards children(with the design and lack of 3D). Many parents may not buy the 3DS for their children because of the dangers, regardless of whether they can turn it off or not.
