People have been using these since ancient times. Either using stone tablets or by carving letters into a table by using that. They weren't very popular until Oujia, the company that manufactures them. Decided to mass produce them as a board game. It can lead to some pretty creepy stuff. But using a TV series as an example of how they work is just plain stupid. If you really want to learn more about them, research the occult and how proper talking boards are used. Although, you probably wouldn't be too happy with what you find. The occult and all their business are just creepy and immoral at most times. Best stay away from it.
