Yeah, welcome to basic human language. People are free to express themselves in a negative manner, they're not free from the consequences though.

or what 99% of these tweets are: "Lol what a ******" or "Lol you're so gay" context really doesn't matter. It just proof that these homophobic words have infiltrated our language and are used regularly between people in conversations all the time.

The fact that they root from homophobic slurs is pretty much irrelevant when used in this context. Calling someone a sh1tface is just as bad as calling someone a ****** in this context. Yeah, I keep using that word because it's important.

The real outrage should be how badly people are treating eachother, targetting homophobic slurs is just a lazy way to look at it and probably the easiest way to gain support (next to the magical N word). Look at any given time in human history and slurs pop up. It's nothing new and there isn't much you can do about it. Remember how ******s were called Mongoloids?

No I think it is digusting as well. If we are to aim to better society we must first allow people to feel okay stating statements like this as well. The goal of accepting gays into society is not to try to make everyone agree/understand what it is like to be gay, but instead to tolerate it by a mindset of "we are all free to make our own choices".

I think gay thoughts are gross and degrading of a man, but I also want them to be able to make their own choices are have fair equality in the terms of the law and social status.

Getting back to the topic at hand, I truly do dislike people using these gay slurs as insults. It is childish, but more so it is just unnecessary. If you hang around people who use these words on a frequent basis I strongly urge you to reconsider what friends you are hanging out with.

theres nothing wrong with thinking that being gay is wrong, but using the word disgusting is pretty offensive.


I use the word phagt and gay all the time to describe someone being a scary cat and when something is whack, so i guess im one of those douchebags .



Maybe it's time for webster to change the meaning of the words kind of like "literally" People used literally in the wrong way that it was given an informal definition.

I see it like this, if you disagree with something like this then that is fine. It is also fine to say that you disagree with it. The problems come when it is used as an insult. However some people get too sensitive and merge insulting comments and comments stating a belief on a subject.

It absolutely is relevant. Its not really about how hurtful these words are (although like any slur it can be very hurtful), its about how much we use them without thinking. Its how we have allowed these words to become a 'normal' part of social interaction. When calling someone you don't like a ****** or something you think is stupid gay becomes a normal thing, it can cause subconscious disdain for the group associated with those words. For example, lets say little Johnny has no idea that in the humble small town of Placeville people hate gays and they are outcasts. His friends always call people they don't like ******* and things they think are stupid gay. Eventually, just to fit in, Johnny starts saying gay and ****** as well. Over time he develops an association with 'gay' being a negative thing. When the class discovers that the new transfer student Jerry is actually gay, Johnny naturally feels that is a negative trait due to the words that he has used for so long building up an association.

I think its pretty obvious that on the internet people are ****ty to each other due to not having any real consequences. I don't think pointing out sociological trends using sites like this is anything near lazy. Sure, slurs have popped up against groups of people since the dawn of language, that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to shed light on them as a bad thing and try to fight the bigotry against those groups in society that is almost always associated with these slurs.

I would say no so long as you still treated them normally and respect them how you woukd any other person. If you try an hurt, defame or otherwise physically/verbally assault because of it, then ues.  

Someone I know told me they were Gay once. I never thought twice about it. Their choice, not mine

Which is why I laugh at the site you linked. It's the internet, of course assholes are going to be assholes. It has nothing to do with irl or how such words are "normal".

I have no place to speak on this post as I use a lot of the same words they do on that link. "You're gay" but it isn't intentionally to hurt someone, just a joke type reference that's quite a habit to say now.

Yes, at least where I live, it is. People use ****** and gay all the time, especially in high school and middle school. Of course they don't usually use it in a homophobic context, but its still a significant part of younger people's vocabulary. These words are so overused they're basically another word for dumb or stupid. Of course slurs and offensive words exist and assholes use them. That doesn't make the common use of homophobic words any less disheartening, and frankly the point you're trying to make is irrelevant because context doesn't matter in this situation. Its not just another ****ty word when not used in a homophobic sense. These words are linked to the prejudice of a group in society and after prolonged use causes subconscious disdain for that group. That's the problem with people using these words casually left and right in real life. Its different that saying "You're an asshole" or "That's ****ing ******ed". Just saying, "Welp, nothing we can do! Assholes will be assholes." Is just counter productive and doesn't contribute anything to this discussion.

But it does. Its there to shed light on the situation by pointing out sociological trends. Lots of these posts aren't even people being assholes, they're just using their normal vocabulary that they use in real life. Look at the top of the page, it says "Homophobic language isn’t always meant to be hurtful, but how often do we use it without thinking?" The point of the site is to show how these words with homophobic origins have become ingrained into our culture and are now basically everyday words, like dumb or stupid. At least where I live its just backing up what I've seen in day to day life back in high school.  

Man, you really are on a jihad against a couple of slurs. Carry on.
