I used one of these for a while, I stopped at a full black farm because they changed how conveyor belts worked a bit. I'll be remaking it using those barriers now that I know it works.
 

If I bought the castle as soon as it was released then does that mean I have the un-nerfed one?

I made one of these in my guild house right when the conveyors came out. Pretty neat stuff. Yes they're allowed. You don't need to worry about getting any punishments for macros or whatever unless you actually ARE using a macro. We have a number of methods we use to test if the player is actually being operated by a person or not.  

I sorta felt guilty... like this was too good... using ~30 conveyor belts and 2 switches in swamp house layout... make an H shape... haven't designed it in the new layouts yet, but they seem like they're balanced for it. Now at least

^This. I tore it down a few days ago and sold everything without knowing about the fix. I'm in the middle of buying everything back to set it up again.

I don't really know how exactly to explain it, but conveyor belts used to push you into the middle of each other like in this image.

Now they only push you half the distance. Here's a GIF of what I mean.

I don't know why they changed how they worked because they were perfectly fine. You could possibly fix the design I used by offsetting them and the switches but oh well I already sold everything so I can't test it. Using barriers is probably the way to go now.
